Sainsbury's apologised to customers for the inconvenience

Sainsbury's has recalled several of its tuna products over fears they could make consumers ill.

The retailer informed the Food Standards Agency that certain items may contain high levels of histamine.

Customers are being asked to return pre-packed products with use-by dates of 4 and 5 November.

Recalled products include Sainsbury's and Taste the Difference fresh tuna steaks, fresh diced tuna and fresh tuna from the fish counter.

Customers will be given a full refund.

High levels of histamine can be caused by poor refrigeration of fish and can lead to itchiness, headaches, dizziness, vomiting and diarrhoea.

Sainsbury's apologised for the inconvenience and assured customers no other products were affected.

A spokeswoman said: "We had a report from a customer to say they felt unwell after eating some tuna."

Most customers would have eaten the fish by now, but there were concerns about the small number who might have frozen it, she added.

"In terms of how it happened, that is something that we are investigating. Any tuna that is on sale now is perfectly ok."

She stressed that Sainsbury's has never had any previous problems with its tuna - which comes from a number of suppliers.
