Beckham left the US, where he plays for LA Galaxy, to be at the bedside of his father at the London Chest Hospital.
The player flew out of Los Angeles on Wednesday and arrived at Heathrow at noon on Thursday. His wife, Victoria, is expected to join him on Friday.
Ted Beckham, 59, was currently "in a stable condition", a hospital trust spokesman said.
A spokesman for the footballer said: "His father has had a heart attack and is currently being treated in hospital.
"His priority is to see his dad and that is his first concern."
Victoria Beckham, currently working in Japan, was cutting short her trip to return to the UK on Friday, the couple's spokesman added.

Mr Beckham, of Chingford, east London, was first taken by ambulance to Whipps Cross Hospital in Leytonstone after complaining of chest pains.
A spokesman for the London Ambulance Service said: "We were called to an address on Hampton Road at 9.20pm last night.
"We sent an ambulance and a fast response car. One patient was taken to hospital."
Mr Beckham, whose first name is David but is known by his middle name Edward, is divorced from the footballer's mother, Sandra. They also have two daughters, Lynne and Joanne.
Beckham and his father reportedly fell out over a book he published in 2005, called David Beckham: My Son.
The book was written without the approval of Beckham, but the pair have since reconciled.
Mr Beckham was influential in the early football career of his son, who followed his support of Manchester United before later joining the club as a player.
Former England captain Beckham and his wife moved to Los Angeles at the end of last season after he joined the Galaxy from Spanish giants Real Madrid.
