Tributes pour in for Dame Anita
Anita Roddick
Anita Roddick: a "true pioneer"
Campaigners, entrepreneurs and politicians from all parties have been quick to salute Body Shop founder Dame Anita Roddick, following her sudden death on Monday night.

Dame Anita's "inspirational" qualities were mentioned, as were her talents as a businesswoman, and a sense of humour which made her "a joy" to work with.

PRIME MINISTER GORDON BROWN

"I was deeply saddened to hear of the death of Anita Roddick, one of this country's true pioneers. She campaigned for green issues for many years before it became fashionable to do so and inspired millions to the cause by bringing sustainable products to a mass market.

Before Body Shop you could only find cruelty-free products in hippie shops - now they are everywhere.
Dan Mathews, PETA

She will be remembered not only as a great campaigner but also as a great entrepreneur. As one of this country's most successful businesswomen she was an inspiration to women throughout the country striving to set up and grow their own companies.

She will be much missed and my thoughts are with her family and friends."

SIR RICHARD BRANSON, FOUNDER OF VIRGIN

"My family and I are very saddened and shocked by the death of the wonderful Anita.

"I had the pleasure and privilege of knowing Anita as a friend for many years and not only admired her greatly as an entrepreneur but as a passionate advocate of socially responsible business.

"She led the way, showing the world that success in business can go hand in hand with making the world a better place.

"She was an incredible human being and will be greatly missed. Our thoughts are with her family at this sad time."

JOHN SAUVEN, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF GREENPEACE

"She was a fantastic pioneer, not just for the business community, but also for social activism, for the environmental cause and really bringing people together and really one of the things that she said was -- really, I'm a communicator. I'm a storyteller and I just do the business as a way of earning some money."

JOHN BIRD, FOUNDER OF THE BIG ISSUE

"What she wanted to do was tear up the old rule book that really what you did was you just made a product, you gave a service and the only people who benefited were the investors. And what she said was that the public should be educated into social change, into ethical and fair trade."

DAN MATHEWS, VICE-PRESIDENT PEOPLE FOR THE ETHICAL TREATMENT OF ANIMALS

"She was the most courageous, progressive pioneer, who risked her business to be the first corporation to announce boldly - in letters a foot high in her store windows - 'against animal tests'. Before Body Shop you could only find cruelty-free products in hippie shops - now they are everywhere."

CHARLES GORE, CHIEF EXECUTIVE OF THE HEPATITIS C TRUST

"She became a patron (of the Trust) and she was always willing to do anything to help. It was extraordinary how it wouldn't matter what it was, she would do it.

She was a great environmentalist, ethical businesswoman, and campaigner for human rights worldwide
Simon Hughes,
Liberal Democrat President

Working with her was so joyful. The great thing about Anita was that she took all her causes incredibly seriously but she never took herself seriously, which made her really fun to be with."

KATE ALLEN,
AMNESTY INTERNATIONAL UK DIRECTOR

"Anita Roddick's passion for human rights was immeasurable and we have lost a true champion of the oppressed and persecuted."

PETER AINSWORTH MP, CONSERVATIVE ENVIRONMENT SPOKESMAN

"Dame Anita Roddick was a pioneer in adapting commercial success to environmental and social values. Her career and achievements proved that you can do good business at the same time as making business good."

SIMON HUGHES MP, LIBERAL DEMOCRAT PRESIDENT

"Anita Roddick was one of the great British role models of our age. She was a great environmentalist, ethical businesswoman, and campaigner for human rights worldwide."

EMMA COLYER, BODY AND SOUL CHARITY

"Anita carried out campaigns on so many issues and often issues that were not popular by the mass of public and took some strength of character to, to become involved in. And in terms of HIV, it was through Anita that we initially raised the issue through the Body Shop that we had managed to challenge the stigma and prejudice that sadly surrounds HIV".

TONY JUNIPER, FRIENDS OF THE EARTH DIRECTOR

"Anita was a leading light of the modern green movement, and was one the first people to combine a profitable business with environmental responsibility. She spent an enormous amount of energy not only in running a pioneering company but also devoted passion and creativity to helping green, human rights and development organisations achieve their aims."
