Man charged with prison murder
![]() Attack: Feltham Young Offenders Institute
A man has been charged with murder after an allegedly racist attack on a 19-year-old man in an institute for young offenders.
Zahid Mubarek died from severe head injuries on what was to have been his last day in Feltham Young Offenders Institution in west London. Scotland Yard's Racial Crimes Task Force has been called in to investigate the case, but the teenager's parents are calling for a full Home Office inquiry. Martin Neary, the director general of the Prison Service, has apologised to Mr Mubarek's parents in a personal letter admitting it failed in its duty to protect their son. The teenager, who was serving a three month sentence for a shoplifting-related offence, was allegedly attacked inside his cell by another inmate. He was taken to Charing Cross hospital, but died one week later from multiple skull fractures.
