UK tourist killed by falling tree

A 61-year-old British tourist has been killed by a tree that fell onto a cafe terrace in western France.

The woman's daughter, in her 30s, was also injured in the accident, which happened at 1100 local time (1000 BST) in Brouage, La Rochelle.

The cafe where they were sitting was located opposite the 200-year-old American ash tree, near the entrance to the city, the AFP news reported.

Weather conditions were said to be normal at the time.

Local authorities in the historic port on the Bay of Biscay said the tree had been preserved in the restoration of the popular resort.

The Foreign Office said it had not been informed of the incident.
