Shayler offers new Gaddafi plot evidence
![]() David Shayler: Arrested in France in 1998
The girlfriend of former MI5 officer David Shayler has arrived in London with what he says is new evidence of British involvement in a plot to kill Libyan leader Colonel Gaddafi.
Annie Machon, who lives with Mr Shayler in Paris, called on Metropolitan Police Commissioner John Stevens to open an inquiry into the claims.
The Foreign Office has dismissed Mr Shayler's allegations that MI6 secret agents were involved in a 1996 plot to assassinate Colonel Gadaffi as "pure fantasy".
Mr Shayler named last month two intelligence officers who he says were involved in the plan. Ms Machon, who also worked for MI5, said: "For three years David has been persecuted by the authorities for telling the truth. "It is time the police used its resources to mount an inquiry." Mr Shayler's lawyer, John Wadham, said there was a need for an investigation. "If David is right then serious crimes have been committed," he said. "There is no sign that Robin Cook or the Security and Intelligence Committee are investigating the matter.
"We are now forced to contact Special Branch who have a responsibility for
investigating crime."
Mr Shayler was arrested in France in 1998 at Britain's request and held for four months after making a series of claims about the working of the security and intelligence forces. A Paris court ruled against his extradition to Britain on the grounds that Mr Shayler's legal problems were politically motivated. Efforts to launch a criminal prosecution against Mr Shayler under the Official Secrets Act have so far failed, prompting the Attorney General to launch a civil action for damages against him in the High Court.
