Paedophile DJ jailed

Denning is led away to begin his sentence
By Prague correspondent Ray Furlong

A former Radio 1 DJ has been jailed in the Czech Republic for having sexual contacts with under-aged teenage boys.

Chris Denning was jailed for four-and-and-half years after making a defence summing up speech lasting a record 44 hours.

The judge found Denning and three other defendants guilty of having sex with under-aged boys that they picked up in bars and computer games arcades.

The conviction is based on evidence given by the boys who said they were given gifts and money in return for sexual acts.

Mr Denning told the court in Prague he merely befriended the boys and admitted only cuddling with them.

His final defence speech lasted 44 hours before the judge interrupted him on Wednesday.

Among other things Denning cited psychological studies on friendship between young boys and older men as well as the effects of time on the human memory.

The case has dragged on since late 1997 and it is not clear whether he will appeal.

One French defendant, who received a three-and-a-half year sentence, has threatened to go on hunger strike if there are more hearings.
