Failure to give extra information may mean a passenger cannot fly

UK passengers to Spanish airports should allow extra time to check in because of new security measures, the Department for Transport has warned.

From Tuesday, passengers must provide their name, date and place of birth, and passport number to their airline.

The information must then be sent to Spanish authorities before the aircraft is allowed to leave the UK.

Some airlines will collect the information at check-in while others will do so when the booking is made.

Passengers with some airlines can provide the advance passenger information (API) online.

The new security measures have been introduced by the Spanish government, and anyone who refuses to give their extra details may be refused permission to travel.

The DfT has warned of some disruption at airports because of the new measures.

"If you are travelling to Spain from 19 June, you are advised to allow extra time to check in for your flight," it warns on its website.
