Dando killer 'was a loner'
![]() Nearly a year on, police still have not traced the killer
The detective leading the hunt for the killer of television presenter Jill Dando says he has a "gut feeling" that the murder was the work of a lone man.
But Detective Chief Inspector Hamish Campbell said the 45-strong murder squad would continue working on the basis that the 37-year-old star was targeted by an obsessive or contract killer, probably working with a gang.
That was because he did not want to rule anything out, he said.
But he told The Guardian that his view was that the murder was the work of a man acting alone. Ms Dando was killed with a single gunshot to the head outside her home in Gowan Avenue in Fulham, south west London, last April. Mr Campbell said he based his feeling on "the lack of criminal intelligence, the confusion at the scene and the mess over the firearm ... and there is something not right about the bullet". Underworld "If a criminal gang, let's say of three, were at work in Gowan Avenue, then there would be three times as many people behind the scenes who would know about it.
He also said he was disappointed that there were 23 people who were seen in the area at the time but who had not come forward. "I cannot believe that some of those people do not know who they are. Have they been on another planet?" he said. Coming up to the the first anniversary of her death, Mr Campbell said he remained confident of catching the killer, despite the lack of any obvious breakthrough in the police inquiry. And he appealed for further help in solving the case. "I am not despondent. He will be caught. I'm a great believer. I really am," he said. |
