The Welsh terrier, named after movie star Mel Gibson, will be rewarded with rusks

Mel, a two-year-old Welsh terrier, has been named top dog at Crufts after winning the prestigious "best in show" award.

The BBC's Jane Warr reports from Crufts (0'40")
The dog is owned by Judy Averis, from Cheadle in Staffordshire. She posed for the cameras with her pet, which is named after the film star Mel Gibson, after scooping the award at Birmingham's National Exhibition Centre.

Mel - whose kennel name is Champion Saredon Forever Young - beat off other hopefuls at the four-day show, which organisers hoped would attract up to 100,000 visitors.

Clutching a glass of champagne after her victory, Mrs Averis said: "I hoped, but I never thought, this day would come and I would put it down just to hard work."

The winning owner, who has been a breeder for 30 years, was asked how she would celebrate.

She replied: "It's been a very stressful day and I think I will just go home to bed. My feet ache terribly but Mel will definitely get a couple of rusks as a treat."
