A British chef has been jailed for a year after being found guilty of trying to enter India without a visa.

Daniel Robinson, 38, from Cheltenham, was arrested after crossing from China into northern India.

He told police that he was an "adventurous" person who had taken the shortest route to meet his daughter, who lives in Delhi.

But a court in India jailed him and fined him 25,000 rupees (£288; $565) for illegally entering the country.

Mr Robinson was arrested by the border police on 23 October 2006 at the Lapkhal post near Chamoli in the northern Indian state of Uttaranchal.

He had been travelling around China for a year.

A senior police official, Abhilasha Bisht, told the BBC that Mr Robinson had committed a crime by entering India without valid documents.

Mr Robinson protested his innocence but on 10 January a court jailed and fined him.

A Foreign Office spokeswoman said its officials were unable to interfere in the judicial process but had been in contact with Mr Robinson and his family.
