UK worker feared killed in Iraq

A British security worker is feared dead and another injured after Iraqi border control officers opened fire on a convoy.

The shooting happened on Friday as the workers passed through Al Zubayr in southern Iraq, south west of Basra.

They were said to be accompanying ambulances travelling from Kuwait with three other security workers.

Iraqi Major General Ali al-Moussawi said police opened fire after a vehicle failed to stop at a roadblock.

Reports from the town claimed two Iraqi policemen were killed and two women bystanders wounded in the clash.

An army spokeswoman said the three other Britons were safe and well.

She added: "We can confirm there was no multinational military involvement".

The Foreign Office said it was not investigating the incident, but that the men's security company, which has not been named, would be dealing with it.

The Foreign Office said the incident did not appear to be related to the kidnapping of five foreigners from a convoy near Basra on Thursday.
