Tyson praised after walkabout
The success of Mike Tyson's controversial visit to Brixton, south London, is proof that the boxer is a positive role model, according to leading figures in the black community. Tyson defied opposition from Brixton's local council to stage an impromptu walkabout, drawing thousands of cheering fans. And, said Mike Best, editor in chief of the Voice newspaper, the popularity of the visit proves he can offer a positive image for young people, despite his rape conviction. Appearing on BBC Two's Newsnight programme, he said: "We're delighted that Mike Tyson came to Brixton. People saw for themselves the man he is.
"He has served his time in prison for what he is alleged to have done. He is getting on with the boxing and he should be given the opportunity to do this."
Mr Best denied that Tyson's positive image rested on the belief he was unfairly convicted of rape. "Is this man going to carry this cross with him for the rest of his life?" he added. But his comments were rejected by Dionne St Hill, managing editor of Pride magazine, who said Tyson was wasting his chance to become a positive role model. "I am not suggesting that he should carry a burden for the rest of his life, but he knows that he carries so much sway (that he should do) something more than just visiting a mosque. "People's perceptions are based on his history. I think it is important to take advantage of the fact that people do respond to him.
"It is important that he does more things, rather than spending large amounts of money on jewellery - perhaps donating money to charity."
But boxing promoter Frank Warren defended Tyson's visit. The boxer was not attempting to portray himself as anything other than a free man, he said. Mr Warren said his client had become unwittingly caught up in a media circus, with newspapers desperate to write him onto their front pages. He added that one paper had even hired a prostitute in an attempt to entrap Tyson. Mr Warren also played down reports that the boxer was planning a similar outing in Manchester's Moss Side, dismissing the claims as media speculation. |
