Icy spell to continue

Snow One truck skidded off the road after hitting sheet ice

Forecasters are warning of further snow and blizzards to come following a weekend in which six people died in accidents on icy roads.

Weather forecast
The Met Office says more icy weather will hit Britain on Tuesday and Wednesday, bringing the prospect of more flooding when the snow thaws.

Motorists were facing a hangover of dangerous road conditions across the UK on Monday following a night where temperatures plunged to minus 10 Celsius.

Forecasters and travel experts warned of further problems for rush-hour drivers with a number of road closures and black ice likely on numerous routes.

The message is to proceed with extreme care
AA spokesman
Areas most at risk on Monday are southern England, the West Country and the North.

An AA Roadwatch spokesman said: "There will be treacherous conditions on roads up and down the country.

"The message is to proceed with extreme care because even it is bright and sunny there is still widespread ice."

Tragedy on the roads

At the weekend police and paramedics reported a catalogue of traffic accidents after a layer of snow fell in areas including South Wales, Gloucestershire, Oxfordshire, Somerset and Wiltshire.

Among those killed was three-year-old Audrey Constant - on holiday from France - who died in Oxshott, Surrey, after the people carrier in which she was travelling hit ice on a bend and mounted the kerb.

The snowfalls came as scores of homes in Cornwall were flooded during torrential rain.

Cornwall fire brigade said it had received more than 450 calls about highway and other flooding incidents.

Three children and 16 horses were rescued from an equestrian centre near Launceston, while others had to be helped from their homes, said a spokesman.
