The worldwide demonstrations against big business erupted into violence in London as police and protesters clashed close to Euston railway station.

There were 40 arrests. Six civilians and one police officer were injured.

At the height of the violence a police van was overturned and set alight.

Protesters and reporters were charged by police. A sit-down demo had earlier forced the closure of the busy Euston Road.

The protest drew support from a range of groups.

Protesters accused the police of provocation. The police said a minority of demonstrators had indulged in "yobbish behaviour...violence for the sake of it".

It had all started peacefully. Demonstrations elsewhere in the capital passed off without incident.
