Domesday Book: viewable to anyone with online access
The Domesday Book has gone online at the National Archives in Kew, London.

The vast survey is England's earliest public record and was completed in 1086 on the orders of William the Conqueror to assess land ownership.

Searching the online version for a placename is free but there will be a charge for material that is downloaded.

The iconic 11th century document is the oldest public record at the archives and can be viewed with a translation from the Latin original.
