The goverment's announcement could help stop the maiming of civilians

The Ministry of Defence has announced an immediate programme to destroy a million anti personnel landmines held by Britain's Armed Forces. The programme has been given the go-ahead by Defence Secretary, George Robertson.

In a letter sent to all MPs, Mr Robertson has outlined a plan, which will rid Britain of virtually all its stocks of a weapon banned from use by last year's Ottawa Convention.

The Defence Secretary's letter reveals plans for the destruction programme that will leave the UK with just 4,000 mines which will be retained for demining training purposes only -- as specifically allowed under the Treaty.

Some 5,000 mines have already been destroyed in recent months but the new programme will set dramatically higher targets, depending on the ability of contractors to meet tough environmental safeguards.

Mr Robertson said: "Getting rid of these evil weapons is one of our main priorities. The Convention allows us four years to destroy them, but I am determined to show our commitment by reaching the target in less than half that time; two years from now.

"Our action today demonstrates how the UK has set its face against the use of these evil weapons which continue to cause suffering and distress to thousands of people around the world."

The Minister added: "Through the expertise of our Armed Forces at our new Mine Information and Training Centre in Surrey we will also continue to offer advice and guidance in support of worldwide humanitarian demining programmes."
