Times announces US edition launch
Times Online site
The Times Online has seen US readership rise
The Times newspaper is to launch a US edition on the back of the success of its website.

The Rupert Murdoch-owned paper will be printed on the presses of another News Corporation product, the New York Post.

It will be launched on 6 June to coincide with the start of the FIFA World Cup and, like the UK version, will be printed in a compact format.

The US already has editions of British papers The Financial Times and a weekly edition of The Guardian

Expansion

Editor Robert Thomson said it was a key moment for The Times as an international brand.

"We have seen a large increase in our Times Online readership in the US and the appearance of the newspaper on the streets of New York marks the next stage in our print and web expansion," he said.

The paper, costing $1, will be sold at about 2,000 outlets across the New York and New Jersey region.

It will be edited by John Mair, currently in charge of the paper's international edition.
