Living in a tree or houseboat was rated as popular as living in a high-rise flat or terraced house in the survey. But raising your home's value with fake Greek pillars and garden gnomes is out, with only 1% of respondents voting for this as the way to make cash.
Almost one in four homebuyers voted a bungalow the home of their dreams. Only one in 50 wanted a "between-the-wars" semi-detached house. Brand new starter homes were the choice of 18%, while 14% would choose to live in a converted barn and 13% a farmhouse. Fewer than one in 10 people wanted to live in a thatched cottage, with only 15% believing wooden beams would add to the value of their home. Those thinking of improving their home think the best method is to install cutting edge technology systems, the survey suggests. A state-of-the-art security system was thought the best way to increase the value of a home by 58% of homebuyers, while 54% wanted to harness solar power. And a safety-conscious 9% thought a nuclear fall-out shelter would keep their investment safe. |
