Police investigate Italian rape
Genoa port
Genoa is home to the biggest port in Italy
Italian police have launched an investigation into the alleged rape of a British woman in Genoa.

The 27-year-old, from the Merseyside area, was working as a crew member on a millionaire's luxury yacht when she was attacked after going ashore.

The 100ft vessel she worked on had been undergoing repairs in Genoa harbour.

The woman told police she had been in the old harbour district with other crew members and had left a bar to find a tobacconist when she was attacked.

In her statement she said she may have been watched and followed by her attacker.

She said: "After I bought some cigarettes I returned to the bar to join my friends but went to the public toilet first. As I tried to close the door this maniac blocked it.

"He came into the cubicle and pushed me against the wall. He put one hand across my mouth and undressed me with the other. He then raped me and left."

The woman was taken to hospital where she was treated for cuts and bruises to her neck and face, as well as shock.

It is the third rape case involving a British woman in Italy in three months.

Genoa police chief Claudio San Filippo said: "We have taken the tapes from the surveillance cameras that are in the old port area and we have also spoken to the rest of the crew and staff at both bars the group visited."
