Pop go the Spice Girls

The Spice Girls will have to watch their backs after readers of a music magazine voted the chart stars Worst Band of 1997.

Ginger Spice, Geri Halliwell, suffered a further blow when she was branded Least Sexy Female in the Melody Maker poll.

But the Spice Girls continue to confound their critics by notching up their second consecutive Christmas number one. Their song 'Too Much' knocked the Teletubbies' 'Say Eh-Oh!' off the coveted top spot.

And, confusingly, another showbiz poll - by readers of The Sun newspaper - declares the so-called Fab Five to be Best Group of the year. Their latest album, Spiceworld, was also voted Best Album while Scary Spice, Mel Brown, is the Sexiest Female.

The awards round up a year in which the Spice Girls suffered their first taste of adversity, with rumours of rows between the girls, poor album sales and criticism from the tabloid press.

They sacked Simon Fuller, the manager many consider to be largely responsible for their fame. They were booed off stage at an awards ceremony in Spain and voted Worst Group by teenage readers of Smash Hits magazine.

Trembling in their boots

There is mixed news too for Oasis, who were voted Second Worst Band by Melody Maker readers. Singer Liam Gallagher was also branded Least Sexy Man and Fool of the Year.

Sun readers though, declare the recent tour by the Mancunian band to be the best of the year.

The poll by Melody Maker suggested that the bands Radiohead and The Verve are set to take over the top spots in the battle of the bands. Readers of the music weekly voted Radiohead as Best Band.

Melody Maker Editor, Mark Sutherland, said: "Our readers have a well-deserved reputation for being ahead of the pack so, on reading these results, I'm sure Radiohead and The Verve will be popping the champagne corks while Oasis and the Spice Girls will be trembling in their boots."

Other findings by Melody Maker include:

  • Best LP was OK Computer by Radiohead
  • Best single was Bitter Sweet Symphony by The Verve
  • Best New Band was Stereophonics
  • Sexiest Woman was Kylie Minogue
