Dando detectives rule out boyfriends

Dando: Killed by a single gunshot outside her home

By crime correspondent Stephen Cape

Detectives investigating the murder of Jill Dando say they have now ruled out all her previous boyfriends from the inquiry.

They have also ruled out the possibility that the killer was a woman.

The TV presenter was shot in the head as she arrived home in Fulham West London in April this year.

Ms Dando, 37, presented Crimewatch, the Holiday programme and the Six O'Clock News. As well as being at the peak of her professional career, she was also looking forward to marrying her fiance, Alan Farthing.

Thirty individuals investigated

Although Jill Dando's previous boyfriends are no longer suspects in the murder investigation, investigation officers have more than 30 names of other individuals who are still being investigated. Their personal records, bank accounts and details of telephone calls have been closely scrutinised.

Officers have built their list of suspects from their own investigations and tip-offs from the public.

The police are concentrating on two main theories: The TV presenter was either killed by a contract hitman, perhaps employed by someone in her private life, or a stalker.

The profile of that man is an angry loner who is isolated.

Officers admit they still have no motive for the killing but they are encouraged by the number of calls they have had from people with information about the bullet which killed her.

They also remain optimistic the killer will be found, but it will take time.
