Mother's anguish after Rottweiler attack

Joe Pritchard is recovering from his injuries

The mother of a four-year-old south Wales boy who needed 130 stitches after being attacked by a Rottweiler says she fears the mental scars will take longer to heal.

BBC Wales's Penny Roberts reports on the Rottweiler attack
Joe Pritchard, from Caerphilly, was mauled about the head and face when the dog turned on him.

The dog is now being kept in a local kennel before a decision is made on whether it should be destroyed.

His mother Rowena says the attack has left him deeply traumatised.

"The scars will heal," she said. "It's what's inside that I'm afraid of, it will take a lot longer for him."

The boy faces wearing a cap for the next six months to hide the injuries on the top of his head. He also has two bite marks on his left temple.

The animal was left in its owner's garden while they went on holiday to Greece. It was being fed daily by a neighbour.

Police are investigating how the dog escaped from the garden and attacked Joe.

Gwent police say they must wait for the owners of the Rottweiler to return from holiday before any charges can be brought.
