Picture gallery: The future of Wembley

Wembley Stadium's twin towers are being replaced under a £475m redevelopment of the home of English football. Built in 1923 for the Empire Exhibition of the following year, it should be properly be called the Olympic Stadium

The original design of four steel masts has been scrapped

Instead, Wembley will be crowned by a huge steel arch

[ image:  ]

The structure will dominate the skyline and be illuminated in the evenings

[ image:  ]

The new-look Wembley will be used for a wide range of other sports, as well as football

[ image:  ]

The stadium will open in 2003 to host the FA Cup final.
