Queen Mother delights the crowds

The Queen Mother is presented with a bouquet

Fans and well-wishers filled Sandringham's grounds on Wednesday to offer the Queen Mother birthday greetings for next week, when she turns 99.

Smiling as she received bouquets and cards, she was driven round the annual Sandringham Flower Show in a golf-style buggy with the Prince of Wales.

The Queen Mother tried to attend the show every year.

She is popular with the crowds there, and many people return to see her as well as the blooms on show.

Michael and Glad Tibthwaite, from Chester, visit the flower show each year.

Mrs Tibthwaite said: "She is only a few years older than me, but she always looks so well. She seems very pleased to be here today and has been waving at everyone."

May Timmer, of Thetford, Norfolk, was returning for the first time since 1977 - Silver Jubilee year.

Family favourite

She said: "I saw the Queen back then in Norwich and it is wonderful to see the Queen Mother a few days before her birthday."

"I hope I look that good if I get to 99."

Sandringham has long been a favourite of the Queen Mother, just as it was for her husband George VI.

In a letter to the Queen Mother, then Queen Mary, he said: "I have always been so happy here - I love the place."
