In a turnaround from the "get rich quick" ethos of the 1980s, workers have complained working from dawn till dusk has a big effect on their health and happiness.
Some 40% said because of stress at work they would be looking for a new job in the coming year.
More than half of those questioned said they often suffered stress at work. One third said their health was suffering, while a quarter said their sex lives were impaired thanks to working long hours. Lack of recognition for a job well done was also given as a reason for moving jobs. "Instead of watching good people leap from job to job in a bid to 'get a life', employers need to confront this change in expectations and adapt the workplace to prevent the strain drain," said Penny de Valk of consultants Ceridian Performance Partners, which helped conduct the research. But it was not all bad news for bosses, she said. Workers had revealed how management could keep them happy - by providing challenging jobs, recognition of effort and a healthy balance between work and private life.
