Summer Wine star dies

Bill Owen as Compo: Fell ill while making a millennium special

Veteran actor Bill Owen - Compo in the BBC One comedy Last of The Summer Wine - has died.

The 85-year-old had stomach and bowel cancer and had been described as "very poorly" following surgery to remove tumours at a private hospital in north London.

He insisted on finishing the programme, but work on the 22nd series of the show has been suspended. His wife Kathie was at his bedside.
