Drumcree parade banned again

Troops prepare for possible confrontation at Drumcree

The Northern Ireland Parades Commission has again refused to allow Portadown Orange Lodge to march along the mainly nationalist Garvaghy Road on Sunday 11 July.

The lodge has been applying to parade on the road every Sunday since last year's controversial Drumcree march was re-routed.

But Portadown Orangemen spokesman David Jones says he is confident the parade will eventually take place.

"It must be borne in mind, this time last year, we had just arrived on the hill," he said.

"However, this year we have already been out on the hill for 12 months so really we are on day 367 and I think now they have got to realise that the parade may go down in the future."

The Orange Order remains in touch with Prime Minister Tony Blair, but as yet has received no definite indication that Portadown District will be allowed to parade.

Orangemen are still maintaining a protest at Drumcree following a Parades Commission decision to ban them from marching down the Garvaghy Road on 4 July.

Minor scuffles erupted on Monday night between loyalists and the security forces with six policemen being injured.

Two people were arrested and a heavy security presence remains.

However, the Orange Order has said it remains happy about the way the protest is being conducted.

Meanwhile, on Tuesday the commission issued determinations covering a number of parades over the busiest period of the marching calendar 10-15 July.

The vast majority of hundreds of parades will take place exactly as notified by the organisers. However, a few have had conditions imposed.
