A 20-year-old man has been remanded in custody after appearing in court charged with the murder of Nottingham schoolgirl Danielle Beccan.

Mark Ontonio Kelly, of the Meadows in Nottingham, spoke only to confirm his name, age and address at Nottingham Magistrates Court on Saturday.

Danielle, 14, was shot in the early hours of last Saturday morning.

Two other men arrested in connection with the case on Friday were released without charge on Saturday night.

Mr Kelly will appear in court again next Friday.

Danielle's father and other family members were in court during the proceedings.

Special assembly

Police say Danielle was struck by one of several shots fired from a gold-coloured car as she walked home from a fair with a group of friends.

She was found by her mother, Paula Platt, who battled to keep her daughter alive.

Detective Superintendent Kevin Flint, leading the murder inquiry for Nottinghamshire Police, said: "There is still a long way to go in this investigation."

Friends of the schoolgirl, a pupil at Elliott Durham Comprehensive in Mapperley, Nottingham, held an remembrance assembly for her on Friday.
