Judge's 'heartbreaking' baby ruling

On Thursday afternoon, in Court 33 at the High Court, Mr Justice Hedley ruled that 11-month-old Charlotte Wyatt should be allowed to die.

It was, said the Daily Mirror's correspondent, heartbreaking to observe a mother and father having to accept their baby girl should die.

The Sun expresses sympathy but supports the ruling, arguing that we must recognise medicine's limits.

The Daily Telegraph says the judgement puts us on a slippery slope.

'Admirable ideals'

Tony Blair's plans to deploy British troops as part of a European battle force to intervene in conflicts in Africa gets a cool reception in the Sun.

The paper describes Mr Blair's ideals as admirable but has doubts about whether EU troops could stop civil wars in countries such as Rwanda or Sudan.

The Daily Express dismisses the extra burden on the "under-manned" army.

The Guardian says Mr Blair has clearly not lost his fervour for human rights-driven military interventions.

'Weakened government'

The Telegraph reports that the fire-damaged Canadian submarine, being towed to Faslane, has caused a political row in Canada.

It says the deal to buy the HMCS Chicoutimi from the UK has weakened the Liberal government. But the Independent says it will not bring it down.

Standard Life's decision to scrap its promise to make up shortfalls in endowment policies attracts criticism.

The Financial Times interprets it as an attempt to woo City investors.

Modest grower

English apples are now in season and the Daily Mail features one of the largest grown in recent years.

The Bramley apple was 18in (46cm) around and weighed 2.5lb (1.13kg).

Geoff Corston from Suffolk is modest about his achievement saying he did nothing special except for putting cow manure around the tree.

But he will not be going into the record books because the largest apple ever grown in Britain weighed a whopping 3lb 11oz (1.67kg).
