Britain poised for more downpours
Wet weather in London
The British summer has turned wet and cold
Heavy rain is expected in most parts of England on Sunday night, continuing a recent run of appalling summer weather.

Heavy, persistent rain and strong winds will hit most of England, with gales in places, the BBC Weather Centre said.

The south west, including flood-hit Boscastle in north Cornwall, will also suffer heavy showers.

Residents of the deluged village can look forward to a calmer, drier Monday morning but heavy rain and blustery winds will return by the afternoon.

The historic village suffered severe damage during flash flooding last week.

A wall of water rushed along the main streets, sweeping cars and trees before it and leaving buildings structurally unsafe.

Sunday's rain comes as locals gather for a church service amid their clean-up.

Gales

They have been allowed back into their properties to secure them, but it will be some time before they can permanently return.

BBC Weather Centre forecaster Matt Taylor said Cornwall will see "heavy rains especially during the first part of the night".

He added: "It won't be as serious as it was last week, but the rain will be heavy."

Gales are expected along isolated parts of the Cornwall coast.

And forecasters predict around 40mm (1.5 inches) of rain will fall over many parts of the Britain overnight.

River levels remain high and there is still a risk of flooding across southern England, Mr Taylor said.

The Environment Agency said localised flooding could occur in West Devon as showers continue.

While Sunday started out dry and bright across much of Scotland, central and eastern England, an area of low pressure from the Atlantic is bringing wind and rain.

The low pressure will stay during the week, bringing unsettled weather with frequent showers and blustery winds across the country.
