The mourners were led by her family and Alan Farthing, her fiance with whom she had been planning her wedding day.
During the service, Mr Farthing sat with Ms Dando's 81-year-old father, Jack, and her journalist brother, Nigel.
Hours before the service, crowds had begun to line the streets of the town.
The congregation included friends both private and famous. Prince Edward's fiance Sophie Rhys-Jones was among the mourners.
Radio presented Gloria Hunniford joined the singer Sir Cliff Richard who had travelled across the country to reach the service.
BBC personalities and colleagues from journalism attended the service, including the news presenters Anna Ford, Moira Stewart and Jeremy Paxman.
Once the service was over, the coffin left Clarence Park Baptist Church while the crowds outside watched in silence.
The funeral courtege left for a private burial. Jill Dando was laid to rest next to her mother, Jean, who died in 1986.
