Murderer Shipman 'not cremated'
Harold Shipman
Harold Shipman is Britain's most prolific killer
Serial killer Harold Shipman has not yet been cremated, the centre holding his body has insisted.

Tabloid newspapers reported on Wednesday that the former GP - who killed at least 215 patients - had been secretly cremated in Yorkshire.

But a spokeswoman for the Medico Legal Centre in Sheffield told BBC News Online it still had his body.

The 57-year-old GP was found hanged in his cell at Wakefield Prison on 13 January.

Centre manager Linda Dale said: "Harold Shipman's body is still being held at the centre.

"It came here immediately after his death. I understand the body has been released by the coroner. We await the removal of the body.

"We arrived yesterday morning to be shown headlines in the Sun and the Mirror and were totally bemused."

A spokeswoman for West Yorkshire coroner David Hinchliff said: "We have issued a cremation order which means the deceased can be cremated, but we do not know if he has or not."
