Naz acknowledges the prince

Hamed picks up his MBE with wife Eleasha

Prince Naseem Hamed wants a date with the royals when he next steps into the ring

The WBO featherweight champion invited the Prince of Wales and sons William and Harry when he collected an MBE at Buckingham Palace on Thursday.

"It was the first time I had met Prince Charles and he seemed a really nice guy," said the 25-year-old Sheffield superstar.

"There was really only one prince here today, and that was Prince Charles, but he said he was particularly pleased to be presenting the MBE to me."

"I told him I wanted to invite his sons to a fight but I'm not sure when my next fight in the UK will happen.

"My last fight was in Manchester and I wanted to invite the princes along to that, but I will ask them along next time.

"I don't know if they are boxing fans and Prince Charles said William and Harry might be at school anyway."

Hamed - Naz to his fans - is one of Britain's most flamboyant fighters and caused controversy when he was awarded the Member of the Order of the British Empire in the New Year's Honours List.

British heavyweight champion Henry Cooper said the award - given for outstanding achievement or service - was "premature".

'I deserve it'

But on Thursday the Prince of the ring said he deserved the honour.

"It is unbelievable for me and my family and close friends to get something like this," he said.

"I truly believe that I deserve it - I have been world champion for four years and will be for many more years."

Hamed, who was accompanied by his wife Eleasha and his brothers Nabeel, 28, and Riath, 29, said he would be celebrating with his family and his son, Sami, who will be one next month.

"My family is very important to me and it's fantastic to be able to celebrate this with them all and with my beautiful son," he said.
