Four e-mails a minute for Jill Dando

Jill Dando: "A very welcome regular guest into our living rooms"

Tributes to murdered television presenter Jill Dando continue to pour into the BBC.

BBC News Online received more than 9,400 e-mails within 30 hours of her death on Monday.

They came from all over the world and messages continue to flood in at the rate of about four a minute.

Television news audiences almost doubled as viewers sought information about the murder.

Unofficial figures said 11m people watched Monday's Six O'Clock News on BBC1, compared with its normal audience of 6m, 9m watched the Nine O'Clock News and 8.5m tuned into the tribute to Ms Dando which followed.

A steady stream of members of the public signed a book of condolences at BBC Television Centre in west London on Tuesday, and other books were opened at BBC offices around the country.

Nearly 700 members of the public phoned the corporation to send their condolences to Miss Dando's family and colleagues.

Most messages expressed shock at her death and sent thoughts to her family and her fiancé Alan Farthing.

Mohamed Bharadia, from London, wrote: "A wonderful personality who became a very welcome regular guest into our living rooms, will be sorely missed for her presentation style, warmth, enthusiasm, verve and humour."

There was also anger. "I truly hope that justice is served in putting her killer behind bars," wrote Paula Cuccurullo from Edinburgh in Scotland.

Some have compared her sudden and violent death to that of Diana, Princess of Wales, in 1997.

"It feels like a déjà vu of the tragic circumstances in Paris two years previous," wrote Adam Hazelwood from London.

And indeed the volume of e-mails coming into the BBC's Website is the greatest since the death of the princess.

On Monday, BBC News Online also registered its highest number of page views - three million - since its launch in November 1997.

Global appeal

Miss Dando accrued thousands of fans worldwide after BBC World began broadcasting Holiday, which she hosted.

E-mails have been coming in from as far as North America, the Far East, the Caribbean and North Africa.

One ex-pat, Elizabeth Huston, wrote from Texas: "I am a Brit and look forward to reading the English news via the Internet every day.

"What a shock I had today when I read about the murder of Jill Dando. I only thought that kind of violence happened over here!"

Some said Ms Dando was for them the quintessential English rose. "For a Chinese like me, Jill Dando reminds me of my time in the UK; the good, joyful time I have spent in this country. She represents it all. For me, she will be sadly missed," wrote Harold Au, Hong Kong.

And others were horrified that such a tragedy could happen in the UK.

"I was one of her fans, especially on her holiday programmes. Really sad for what had happened. Such a brutality in the heart of Europe! We'll miss you," wrote B Margaa from Addis Ababa in Ethiopia.

However, some complained that the BBC had given too much airtime to news of the death. "Never mind Jill Dando. What about all the people in Serbia who are being killed?" said one unnamed caller.
