Briton accused of smuggling animals

Geckos were among the animals found by customs officers
A British filmmaker and conservationist has appeared in a court in Australia charged with attempting to smuggle reptiles, frogs and insects out of the country.

Michael Linley was arrested at Perth International Airport on Monday after more than 200 animals were allegedly found in his luggage.

The haul - thought to be the largest ever in the state of Western Australia - included various kinds of geckos, frogs and a type of lizard known as a dragon, some of which were laying eggs.

Customs officials made the discovery using X-ray equipment to inspect Mr Linley's two suitcases following a tip-off from a member of the public.

Perth magistrates court heard that Mr Linley had told customs staff he knew what he had done was illegal.

Passport surrendered

The court was also told that he was likely to plead guilty when he appeared again later this month.

Geoffrey Vickeridge, defending, said Mr Linley was a well-known film producer who had won international awards for conservation.

His credits included work for National Geographic magazine, he said.

Mr Linley was released on bail on condition he surrendered his passport.

The animals are to be released back into the wild as soon as possible by Western Australia's Department of Conservation and Land Management.
