Model murderer jailed for life

Malka attempted a half-hearted suicide cover-up

The jealous lover of model Kadamba Simmons, a former girlfriend of Oasis singer Liam Gallagher, has been jailed for life for her murder.

Former Israeli soldier Yaniv Malka, 22, had strung up her naked body in a shower and then made half-hearted attempts on his own life to make it look as though the model had died in a suicide pact.

But a jury at London's Old Bailey rejected his claims and found that Malka had strangled Miss Simmons last June before placing her neck in a noose.

The family of the 24-year-old London model and actress broke down in tears and hugged each other as the jury returned its verdict.

'Great suffering'

Judge Elgan Edwards told Malka: "Kadamba Simmons had her whole life ahead of her. It was a life of great promise. You deprived her of that life.

"You caused suffering to her and great suffering to her family and friends."

The court had heard that Miss Simmons had been swept off her feet by Malka after meeting him on holiday in Goa.

But the romance turned sour, and she called the relationship off.

The night before she was killed in a friend's flat in Islington she told her father: "He is a loser. I don't want to end up with a loser.

"He cannot look after himself - how can he look after me?"

Malka, who had pleaded guilty, showed no emotion as he was sentenced for the murder. His parents left court refusing to comment.

Outside the court, Miss Simmons' father, cameraman John Simmons, 50, said: "For Kadamba's mother, her sister and I, the essence and truth of our beloved daughter remains untouched.

"The love she gave and the love she generated will never die."

Detective Sergeant Richard Briers said: "This was an act born out of jealousy. Yaniv Malka was a very jealous man.

'Tragic case'

"He made the decision that if he could not have Kadamba, no one else would. It is a very sad, tragic case, but justice has been done."

Miss Simmons dated Liam Gallagher when his band Oasis was still unknown. She introduced his brother Noel to her friend Meg Matthews, who later became his wife.

Her wide circle of friends included champion boxer Prince Naseem Hamed, with whom she had a six-month romance in 1995, and singer Bjork.

Her acting career was just taking off after she had a minor role in the Julia Roberts film Mary Reilly.

She was about to make a film in South Africa, and had been featured in the Pantene shampoo advertisements on television.

After Miss Simmons' death, Liam Gallagher said: "She was a good friend. It is tragic that she is dead."
