Fur flies over mink farms

About 180,000 mink are being bred in the UK

Mink farmers have defended their industry against allegations of cruelty, two days before the battle over the future of British fur farming is stepped up.

Mink farmer Mick Cobbledick: "They have the best of everything"
On Tuesday Labour MP Maria Eagle is to publish a private members' bill calling for all fur farming in the UK to be banned.

She wants the "inhumane" industry to be stopped, arguing that public attitudes to wearing fur have shifted against the fashion in recent years.

Her bill is expected to receive government support, putting the farming of mink, the only animal bred for fur in the UK, under threat.

But British mink farmers, including Mick Cobbledick, are angered by the proposed bill.

He told BBC One's Countryfile programme that his animals are not ill-treated in any way.

The BBC's Lisa Holland: Fur farming is big business
"There's no scientific basis for a ban, in fact there's a lot of scientific evidence to support the way we farm," he said.

"They have the best food, the best nutrition and the best of everything. The British public have been brainwashed by animal rights propaganda now for 20 years."

Although the number of fur farms in the UK has fallen to 11, the industry is still big business.

About 180,000 mink are being bred in the UK, from a total of 24m worldwide.

Animal rights campaigners argue that fur farming is unnecessary.

But many fur farmers argue that a ban would boost the European market, including countries whose treatment has been condemned as much worse.
