Gazza in '£1m divorce deal'

Paul and Sheryl before the divorce

Footballer Paul Gascoigne has agreed a £1m-plus divorce settlement with his former wife, Shery, according to a report in the Sun newspaper.

The couple are reported to have struck a deal which will see Sheryl pick up a £700,000 lump sum.

She will also receive £120,000 a year to support herself, their two-year-old son Regan, and her two children from her previous marriage.

Sheryl would also keep the couple's £300,000 home in Hertfordshire, a £45,000 Jaguar car, a £40,000 Range Rover and expensive jewellery, the paper said.

The 33-year-old former model was granted a decree nisi on the grounds of the Middlesbrough and England star's unreasonable behaviour last August.

Gazza, 31, met Sheryl in 1991, and the couple got married shortly after he played a starring role in England's Euro 96 campaign.

But the marriage was soon in trouble, with the midfielder admitting beating his wife.

Last year he acknowledged he had a drink problem, and checked into the exclusive The Priory Clinic in Roehampton, south-west London, for treatment.

The Sun said Gazza was being generous to his former wife with the divorce settlement because he still loves her. Solicitors for the couple are said to be close to a final agreement.
