R.I.P. 2002
2002 passed away in the very early hours of Wednesday morning, fully aware that its time had come.

Its life was often a confused one, for although it was a member of the little-known Noughtie family, it often seemed that it would have been more comfortable at home with the Seventies.

Happier times
In particular, its obsession with strikes, global financial uncertainty, jubilee street parties, Brazil winning the World Cup, and Ozzy Osbourne seemed to indicate that 2002 had been "born old".

Amid the retrospection, there were moments of mischief, such as the joy brought to many by its palindromic name; the extra pleasure on 02.02.2002 and 20.02.2002 will not be repeated for years to come.

Its early life was characterised by a sunny disposition, but in older age - particularly towards the end - it took on a sense of gloomy foreboding like many old folk, always talking about the war.

It is survived by fellow Noughtie, 2003.

No flowers.

2002; a palindrome. Topsy-turvy. Equally confusing backwards as forwards. Nonsensical whichever way you look at it. P.I.R!

The last of the visually special years (1999, 2000, 2001, 2002).
