Beckham gives Britain biggest smile
David Beckham and Trevor Sinclair celebrate England's opening goal
Sheer delight for Beckham after scoring the winner
David Beckham's World Cup penalty against Argentina raised the biggest grin on British faces in 2002, according to a poll.

The England captain roared with delight as his shot hit the back of the net in Japan's Sapporo Dome on 7 June, laying to rest painful memories for both player and team.

And a survey by internet bank Smile found the nation joined Beckham in his joy, rating it the moment that gave Britain the most to smile about in the last 12 months.

Moments that raised a smile
1. David Beckham's penalty against Argentina in the World Cup
2. Revelations about John Major and Edwina Currie's affair
3. Ozzy Osbourne performing for the Queen at Buckingham Palace
4. David Beckham and Kirsty Howard presenting the Commonwealth baton to the Queen
5. Sven Goran Eriksson and Ulrika Jonsson's affair
6. Scottish curlers winning gold at the Winter Olympics
7. Jade baring all on Big Brother 3
8. Senegal beating France in the World Cup opener
9. Tony Blackburn winning I'm A Celebrity...
10. The Queen having her photo taken by a Canadian sports star who put his arm around her
The poll of 6,000 people also found revelations of John Major and Edwina Currie's affair a top smile moment, putting it at two on the list.

David Beckham is named a second time for the moment he and Kirsty Howard, six, presented the baton to the Queen at the opening of the Commonwealth Games in Manchester in July.

And the Scottish curling team winning gold at the Winter Olympics was another sporting success that made British hearts glad, along with Senegal beating France in the opening match of the World Cup.

England manager Sven Goran Eriksson also appears in the top 10 smile moments - but for events off the pitch: namely his affair with TV presenter Ulrika Jonsson.

Meanwhile in the celebrity world reality TV shows hit the top ten, specifically Jade Goody bearing all on Big Brother 3 and DJ Tony Blackburn winning I'm a Celebrity... Get Me Out Of Here.

The Queen made it onto the list twice, having her photo taken by a sports star in Canada who put his arm around her and asking ageing rocker Ozzy Osbourne to perform at Buckingham Palace.
