Shirley Clemons, 48, caused the baby girl, who cannot be identified for legal reasons, a "devastating" brain injury, Coventry Crown Court was told.

Prosecution lawyer Julia Macur, QC, said Mrs Clemons hurt the baby, who now suffers from cerebral palsy, because she was "crying or being disruptive" while in her care last March.

Ms Macur said: "The prosecution say that Mrs Clemons injured (the baby) most probably in a flash of anger, but nevertheless in the flash of anger intended to do her really serious bodily harm."

Ms Macur said the baby, who also suffers from epilepsy and has hearing and vision difficulties since the alleged incident, will "never be a normal child".

Mrs Clemons claims she shook the baby to resuscitate her after she stopped breathing, the court was told.

The child was taken to hospital after Mrs Clemons dialled 999.

'Momentary lapse'

The prosecution said Mrs Clemons had been "deceitful" in telling the police afterwards that she had been trying to resuscitate the baby .

Ms Macur said: "This was a momentary lapse, this was a rage and in that rage Mrs Clemons' qualifications as a good and careful childminder went of the window."

She added: "The prosecution say she shook the baby before there was any need to resuscitate her".

Mrs Clemons, of Mantilla Drive, Styvechale, Coventry, denies causing grievous bodily harm with intent and a charge of child cruelty.
