Spice Girls scoop MTV Europe best group award

The Spice Girls have got their own back on Oasis at the MTV Europe awards.

The Fab Five, just back from entertaining Prince Charles and Nelson Mandela in South Africa, took the best band prize.

It was a sweet triumph on a glitzy night in Rotterdam. Last year the girls left the ceremony empty-handed while Oasis took the award and branded Spice music rubbish only listened to by four-year-old girls.

"To win, it's just off its head," beamed Sporty Spice Mel C, after girl power conquered Oasis and U2.

This year's ceremony in Rotterdam was orderly and polite with no slanging matches or drunken antics - in public at least.

There was more British success with The Progidy winning three awards for their uncompromising style of dance music - best dance act, best alternative act and best video for the track Breathe.

And Oasis did not miss out completely, taking the prize for best rock act.

But there was also a serious note to proceedings as actor Dennis Hopper presented a special award to the Landmine Survivors Network.
