Saturday, December 19, 1998 Published at 21:59 GMT UK No sign of Iona capsize victims ![]() Only one body has so far been recovered The sixth day of the search for three men missing off the Scottish island of Iona after their boat capsized last week has ended with no sign of the accident victims. More than 100 volunteers were scouring the chilly waters along the coastline of Mull, off the west coast of Scotland, and nearby islands. The search will resume again on Sunday. One man swam to safety and the body of another was quickly recovered after the boat carrying the five young men was swamped by a freak wave.
Presumed dead Alisdair Dougall, 19, Davie Kirkpatrick, 23, and Logie Macfadyen, 24, have been presumed dead for several days but there is still no sign of their bodies. The trio - together with 23-year-old Robert Hay and lone survivor Gordon Grant, 33 - got into trouble as they returned home after a night out at a dance in the village of Bunessan on Mull a week ago. Their dinghy foundered, possibly after being hit by a wave, in the sound between Mull and their home island of Iona. Mr Grant, the party's designated driver, was the only member of the group who had not been drinking. He managed to swim ashore but the others are believed to have drowned. Private funeral Mr Hay, whose body was washed ashore on Sunday, will be buried in Iona Abbey on Tuesday. Former Labour leader John Smith - whose 25-year-old daughter Catherine is close to Mr Grant - was also buried at the abbey in 1994. Reverend David Taylor said the funeral would be a private affair for family and friends of Mr Hay, who had recently filmed an episode of the television show Blind Date. The programme's host, Cilla Black, has sent a message of condolence to Mr Hay's family. Searching all day On Saturday a spokesman for Oban Coastguard said: "We had 113 people out searching all day but they have had to finish without finding anything when it got dark. "Two coastguard teams and a couple of fishing boats joined them. "Most of the volunteers have been combing the coasts on the west side of Mull, from the Sound of Iona to Ulva, and also the island of Colonsay. "They will be resuming the search tomorrow." |
