Man remanded over body parts killing

Police are extending their search beyond the county

A 30-year-old man charged with murdering a restaurant owner whose body parts were found in carrier bags has been remanded in custody.

Zahid Iqbal, of Moorend, Cleckheaton, near Dewsbury, West Yorkshire, appeared before a special sitting of Dewsbury magistrates' court charged with the murder of Nissar Ahmed.

Mr Iqbal, who spoke only once to confirm his name, was remanded in custody until Friday.

Police launched a murder inquiry after after an off-duty policewoman discovered the legs and intestines of Mr Ahmed's body on 13 November.

She found the remains while out walking her dog in Briestfield on the outskirts of Dewsbury.

Further searches in Holmfirth and Huddersfield uncovered more body parts, and on Friday more remains were recovered from the Calder and Hebble Navigation at Copley, near Halifax, after a search by a police diving team.

West Yorkshire Police have confirmed that searches have been extended to an area just outside the county boundaries but would not give exact locations.

Mr Ahmed, who was 34 and a father of six, owned a restaurant in Holmfirth, the setting for the long-running Last of the Summer Wine BBC television series. He lived in the West Bowling area of Bradford.
