The BBC's Clinton Rogers reports on the arrest
Police have arrested a man in Somerset in connection with the murder in France of the British schoolgirl Caroline Dickinson.

Caroline was 13 when she was raped and killed on a school trip two years ago.

The 41-year-old man arrested is thought to have been travelling in Brittany at time of murder.

He was picked up in Somerset last week and has since been released on police bail after providing a DNA sample.

The unnamed man from Frome apparently resembles a photofit picture of a prime suspect released by French police based on descriptions from Caroline's schoolfriends of a man seen nearby.

The arrest is part of an on-going inquiry by French police, which involves checking people who were staying at hotels within a 25-mile radius of the hostel where Caroline was killed.

Caroline's father has said the latest development should be treated with caution until the results of the gene test are known.

Police in France have carried out mass DNA tests on local men in a bid to find the murder but after more than two years the crime remains unsolved.

The schoolgirl, from Cornwall was staying in a shared dormitory in Pleine Fougeres in Brittany on a school trip when she was strangled in July 1996.

The release of the photofit of a man described as the main suspect prompted a number of new leads to emerge through the public response but did not bring a breakthrough.

Caroline's parents have travelled to France many times to lead the campaign for information about their daughter's death.

On the second anniversary of the murder, John Dickinson told the BBC: "People say have you had time to grieve and of course I have grieved a lot but because the killer is still at large, I can't relax until he's caught and it doesn't matter how long that will take."
