Thursday, August 20, 1998 Published at 04:18 GMT 05:18 UK UK Dome spirit is failing ![]() Plans for a "Spirit Zone" in the Dome may have to be scaled back owing to lack of sponsorship The company behind the Millennium Dome has said it may have to alter or scrap its designs for the section on religion, because it has so far failed to find a sponsor for it.
Around £6m is being sought for the zone.
The 13 other zones have all either had their sponsorship finalised or are involved negotiations over funding. But the Spirit Zone has failed to attract firm offers of financial support even after business with religious links had been approached. Troubled 'zone' The Spirit Zone is intended to represent spirituality and religion. From the outset of the dome's planning stages church groups criticised it for giving what they saw as a low priority to the religious aspect of the millennium.
Plans for the zone included a giant pyramid and "pilgrims' progress" through the history of religion. The New Millennium Experience has insisted that whatever happens religion will still be represented within the Dome - even if it means a scaled down version of the zone. |
