Police have revealed that murdered teenager Leanne Tiernan was strangled using a scarf and cable ties.

The items were found around her neck when her remains were discovered in woodland.

The body had been wrapped in plastic bags then hidden in a quilt cover and dumped in Lindley Wood, near Otley, Yorkshire, where it was found on 20 August.

Leanne, 16, from Bramley, Leeds, was reported missing in November last year after she failed to return home following a Christmas shopping trip.

Detective Superintendent Chris Gregg, of West Yorkshire Police, said plastic cable ties had been used to strangle the youngster and bind her hands.

A dark coloured scarf was also found around her neck.

Mr Gregg said: "When Leanne's body was found we discovered a number of bindings on her body.

"Her hands had been bound, she had a ligature around her neck and a scarf around her neck.

"We believe these items were used for strangulation."

Mr Gregg said the cable ties were yellow, black and neutral in colour.

Detectives also appealed for help in tracing Leanne's missing coat and boots - officers produced exact replicas of her blue Ellesse coat and black boots at a news briefing.

Search continues

Mr Gregg said: "If anyone has any information about where they are or has seen them discarded somewhere, or knows who has them now, we want to hear from them."

Officers are continuing a search in the dense woodland.

Leanne was last seen at 1650 GMT on 26 November, when she parted company with her friend, Sarah Whitehouse, in Bramley, after they had made a shopping trip to Leeds.

Leanne's mother Sharon Hawkhead broke down as she spoke at a news conference last week to appeal for information to find her daughter's killer.
