Monday, August 10, 1998 Published at 05:20 GMT 06:20 UK UK Pools really are a lottery The pools industry has declined from a £1bn to a £400m a year industry The Liverpool-based pools company Vernons has become the first company other than Camelot to be granted a national lottery licence. The company is seeking to break into a market that it blames for harming its business, by launching a game based on the football pools.
Vernons attributed its decision to cut 200 jobs in February to the lottery. In the new game customers buy a ticket with a random list of fixtures which are then matched to results from the English and Scottish football leagues. Camelot will be paid for the use of terminals and support services.
