Strike shuts Glasgow childrens' homes

Glasgow City Council denies it plans to privatise the home-help service

Seven more Glasgow children's homes have now shut to add to the three already closed by a social workers' dispute.

About 60 children have been sent to other homes, foster homes or to stay with relatives.

One group of children has been taken on a hastily-arranged caravan holiday.

BBC Scotland's Bob Wylie: "Unison telling staff to return"
About 1,500 social workers, home-help staff, welfare workers and other social work staff walked out on Monday in a row over home-help restructuring plans.

Strikers say that moving home-help staff to another council department could lead to job cuts and eventual privatisation.

Public sector union Unison has been ordered by a court to suspend help for the unofficial dispute.

Glasgow council leader Frank McAveety denied that the council intended to privatise the service and repeated his call for workers to return to their posts.

"This illegal and unnecessary strike is hitting the most vulnerable and voiceless in Glasgow," he said.
